Speech pipeline

How a speak() call from NVDA becomes audio. The code lives in addon/synthDrivers/dengjen_neural_voices/adapters/nvda/synth_driver.py unless noted.

Three execution contexts

Speech touches three kinds of thread, and each blocking call has to run in the right one.

Context What runs there

NVDA main thread

SynthDriver.speak(), cancel(), pause(), and every setter (voice, rate, variant, speaker). The setters are synchronous, so the TTSBackend calls they make are blocking.

dengjen_asyncio (event-loop thread)

The speech tasks, and the grpc.aio calls they make. It is a daemon thread owned by AsyncEngine in aio.py.

dengjen_executor (thread pool)

Blocking audio calls: WavePlayer.feed, sync, idle, plus the index callbacks. Tasks reach it through run_in_executor. The pool has max(1, cpu_count // 2) workers.

AsyncEngine is a singleton (ENGINE). The module-level helpers (ensure_running, asyncio_create_task, run_in_executor, …) delegate to it, and tests build their own AsyncEngine to exercise its lifecycle without sharing process-wide state. ensure_running() restarts the loop thread if it has died. Starting it waits up to LOOP_STARTUP_TIMEOUT (5 s); stopping it waits up to LOOP_SHUTDOWN_TIMEOUT (2 s).

From speech sequence to tasks

speak(speechSequence) drops the speech with a log error when no backend is available (self.tts is None). Otherwise it:

  1. Opens tts.create_synthesis_context(), which snapshots speech_options and restores them afterwards. Rate, volume, pitch and language commands inside one sequence therefore never leak into the next.

  2. Calls cancel() to stop any speech still playing.

  3. Builds the task list on the NVDA thread (_build_speech_tasks) and hands it to process_speech(), which schedules it on the event loop. The returned handle is kept as _current_task so cancel() can cancel it.

_build_speech_tasks walks the sequence once:

  • Strings accumulate. Before any command other than IndexCommand, and at the end, the accumulated strings are joined with newlines and passed to _create_speech_tasks, which creates one or more SpeechTask objects. IndexCommand values do not flush accumulated strings.

  • IndexCommand values are collected and reported together in a single IndexReachedTask, placed after all the speech tasks. NVDA therefore sees every index after the audio has played, not as each position is reached.

  • BreakCommand becomes a BreakTask that plays silence of the requested length.

  • LangChangeCommand switches tts.language (a missing voice is ignored) and selects the WavePlayer for the new voice’s sample rate.

  • RateCommand, VolumeCommand and PitchCommand set the matching option on tts.

  • The sequence always ends with a DoneSpeakingTask.

When Structural reading is on, the voice is multi-speaker with at least two speakers, the joined text is split into segments and each becomes its own SpeechTask with its own speaker (see Domain layer).

Running the tasks

_process_speech_sequence awaits the tasks in order.

  • A cancelled task ends the sequence.

  • Any other exception is logged and marks the sequence failed. The remaining tasks are skipped except IndexReachedTask and DoneSpeakingTask, so NVDA still receives its completion notification.

  • DoneSpeakingTask waits for every player the sequence used to go idle, then calls the index callback with None, which fires synthDoneSpeaking. A sequence can use several players, because a language change can switch to a voice with a different sample rate.

A SpeechTask does the following:

  1. While say-all is running, newlines become spaces and sentence silence is set to 50 ms.

  2. If it carries a speaker, that speaker is set on the voice for the duration of the task and the original is restored in a finally block.

  3. It looks up the phrase cache (skipped with spatial audio). On a hit it plays the cached chunks.

  4. On a miss it streams chunks from the voice’s generate_audio(). If night mode, normalisation or spatial audio is on, each chunk passes through an AudioStreamProcessor first, and the processor is flushed at the end. Each chunk is fed to the player, then the task waits for player.sync.

  5. It stores the collected chunks in the cache, unless spatial audio is on or the speaker could not be applied.

Players

WavePlayer instances (16-bit) are created on first speech, not at startup, because opening one fails on a machine with no audio device and the synthesiser must still load there. There is one player per sample rate, keyed (sample_rate, 2) instead when spatial audio needs stereo. If a stereo player cannot be opened, the driver logs a warning, turns spatial audio off and falls back to mono.

cancel() cancels the asyncio task and stops every player used by the current sequence. pause(switch) forwards to the same players.

The TTSBackend port

ports/tts_backend.py defines the only interface the domain layer uses to reach an engine. Nothing in it imports NVDA or gRPC.

Member Contract

initialize(), check_version(), shutdown()

Blocking. Start, handshake and stop the engine.

load_voice(config_path)

Blocking. Returns a LoadedVoice with the backend’s voice id, sample rate, speakers, whether it supports streaming output, and a SynthOptions with the voice’s defaults.

get_synth_options(id), set_synth_options(id, **kwargs)

Blocking. Read and change a loaded voice’s speaker and scales. SynthOptions.parameters carries backend-specific knobs that have no named field.

synthesize(id, text, rate, volume, pitch, sentence_silence_ms, streaming)

The one true async generator. Yields PCM bytes, and runs on the event-loop thread.

Errors derive from BackendError: BackendUnavailableError (the engine cannot be started or reached), VoiceLoadError and SynthesisError.

DengjenVoice.synthesize in domain/tts_system.py skips text under ten characters that consists only of ignored punctuation, so those utterances never reach the engine.

Phrase cache

domain/phrase_cache.py keeps recently synthesised PCM for short utterances, such as interface labels, so repeating them skips the engine round trip.

  • A thread-safe LRU of at most 120 entries; an entry larger than 12 KB is not stored.

  • The key is the stripped text, voice key, speaker, rate, volume and pitch rounded to 0.1, and the normalise and night-mode flags.

  • Changing night mode, normalisation or spatial audio clears the cache. Structural reading does not.
